Having read several of Hemingway's longer novels (The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls) I looked forward to this collection with great anticipation. My appetite was only whetted with the first story in the collection, "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber", which I found to be magnificent. Alas, it proved to be the star of the collection. While several of the remaining stories were certainly outstanding (in particular "Fifty Grand", A Way You'll never Be", "Under the Ridge", "An African Story" and "I Guess Everything Reminds You of Something"), a number of the stories were less than spectacular. Particularly disappointing were the numerous efforts of under 750 words. Now, you may be a brilliant writer, and even a master of the art of story telling, but in my opinion, you cannot tell a story in two pages. You can set a scene; you can paint a picture, but you cannot tell a story. I counted ten such SHORT SHORT short stories and another fifteen only slightly longer. Those stories which ran beyond 6-8 pages were, by and large quite enjoyable.Having read several of Hemingway's longer works and found them to be, in some cases, in need of editing, and now having read a number of his works which can only be described as overly brief, I'm left with the opinion that he is best enjoyed in those works of 10-200 pages, not coincidentally the length of his Pulitzer Prize winning novella, "The Old Man and the Sea".I'm struck by a passage in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" in which the Communist partisan Pilar recounts the revolution within her village in which the Fascists (a/k/a the successful citizens) were rounded up and murdered. Those twenty pages, lifted out, would have qualified as one of the greatest short stories ever written, yet it becomes somewhat lost in a story that wanders at times.Certainly, this book will be enjoyed by anyone who has developed a taste for Hemingway and to a lesser extent, those who enjoy the art of the short story. I only gave high marks to roughly a third of the offerings, however those 23 stories account for almost 75% of the pages in the book. The other efforts are simply too short for my taste, and they account for a majority of the stories in the collection.
Some were wonderful and some were no more than an afterthought. But...it's Hemingway, how can you resist. You can see the bones for some of his famous novels in a few of these short stories.I liked those the best.Several were very gorey & visceral (literally) and if you re an animal lover, very upsetting. The beautifully written, but uninteresting ones make you realize how hard writing a best seller really is
What more can be said about Ernest Hemingway? I enjoy his clear writing style and engaging characters. My husband and I were traveling to Key West and wanted to read some Hemingway before we visited the Hemingway museum, but I’m not great at getting through novels quickly so this book was an accessible way for me to read some of his works before our trip.It is a little bulky and the pages are thin - but that is to be expected for a complete works - I did decide to leave it at home for our trip though. This book isn’t something you will sit down and read straight through unless you are a major Hemingway fan. I suspect one might get bored if they try since Hemingway tends to stick to the same themes over and over again. However, it will be great to pick up and read a few stories every now and again.I got this book used, and it was in the condition described - I’m completely satisfied with my purchase and am glad to have this one on my shelf!
I am specifically writing about the Hemingway Library edition of the collected short stories. I have not read any Hemingway for many years-really since high school. Rather than jump into his novels I thought I would start with the short stories. I am not that knowledgeable about Hemingway in any expert way-as opposed to many other writers whom I have read, studied and re-read( Joyce, Lowry, James and Tolstoy just to name a few). I found these stories to be written in a simple straightforward style which is deceptive in its plainness. Natural man , unnatural man, God or lack thereof, cynicism, idealism thwarted, suicide , despair, existential angst, modern man lost in purpose, cruelty, senseless violence, sexual politics-these themes are in abundance. I can see why Hemingway later committed suicide. This edition is interesting if you care about his revisions and changes to the stories as an insight into his creative process. If you don’t care you can choose another edition or skip the supplementary material.
Hemingway is a master of putting you not only in the physical space of the story (what it looks, sounds, smells, tastes like) but also lulling your emotions to the required state. His stories tend to be "slice of life" narratives and with no moral takeaways, simply the experience of being there. The book contains 70 stories ranging from 2-30 pages. Most are in the 5-10 page range.
Like many, I love reading Hemingway. I was a little hesitant to pay the cost of this collection of stories, but after reading it I love it. This is a collectible book, with a nice binding and hardcover. It has some stories displayed with several versions of the same story, with pencil lines through sections he scratched out. It provides a fascinating look into the mind of one of the truly great writers. Viewing the way he edited and rewrote stories as he tweaked and polished them, makes me admire Hemingway all the more, seeing what a true craftsman he was. I've read that he worked very hard at his writing, and this book gives us all a peak into that world he worked within, molding and shaping his stories to create what we have come to know of his works. I love this book.
I read Hemingway's longer stuff in me yout'. Didn't care for it much. Read this when I was much older, and liked it a lot. Revisited three of his novels, and was impressed at how much better they were. :-) But he still might be better as a short-story guy. This is a bit uneven, but an excellent read.
