Lunatics, by Dave Barry

Philip Horkman is a happy man, the owner of a pet store called The Wine Shop, and on Sundays a referee for a local kids’ soccer league. Jeffrey Peckerman is the proud and loving father of a star athlete in the girls’ ten-and-under soccer league, and he’s not exactly happy with the ref. The two of them are about to collide in a swiftly escalating series of events that will send them running for their lives, pursued by the police, soldiers, subversives, bears, revolutionaries, pirates, and a black ops team that does not exist. Where all that takes them you can’t even begin to guess, but the literary journey there is a masterpiece of inspiration, chaos, and unadulterated, well, lunacy. And they might even learn a lesson or two along the way.

Loved this book! This is a fast paced, hilarious, and full of surprises book. The book is written from the perspective of the two main characters. One author describes the events through one character. The other author describes the same events through the other character. If you have seen "The Affair" on Showtime then think of this book like that....except absolutely hilarious.I loved the two characters because of how different they are. The events they go through get more and more ridiculous and obviously would never happen in the real world, but when Dave Barry is writing then the world is one messed up place.Very fun book. Great for vacation or the beach

This is one of the funniest and rowdiest things I've seen from Dave Barry (everything he does is great though, he is a very funny man). I listened to 'Lunatics' on my Kindle (text to speech, while working) and then bought the audio CD. My son-in-law and I took a 1,600 mile roadtrip. The book only lasted about 2 of the 4 days but those 2 days were full of laughs. Thanks Dave, you're NUTS!It, if faithful to the book, would make a GREAT MOVIE (Forrest Gump ish).

WARNING: Do not read "Lunatics" on crowded public transportation, in doctors' waiting rooms, or - heaven forbid - church. You WiLL chortle, snort, and laugh. Out loud. You will be the subject of glares, frowns, and disapproving harrumphs. On the other hand, the book is worth the embarrassment. This is a flat-out funny book featuring two very different men: one a prim and virtuous pet store owner about whom the phrase "politically correct" may have been coined, and the other a crude, narcissistic, and socially-inappropriate "forensic plumber," i.e., a plumber who testifies in court cases. From their first meeting, these two detest one another, but circumstances repeatedly throw them together under the most unusual and hilarious circumstances. Together, this inept duo ends up front and center on the world stage, repeatedly and unintentionally affecting everything from zoo animals to national and international security interests.I've always liked Dave Barry but the addition here of co-author Zweibel, a renowned comic writer, has added a deeper and more sustained note of hilarity to the book. For good or ill, this one has "future movie" written all over it. But there is no way a movie could be as good as this book.If you are a somber soul, don't bother with this book, but if you revel in riotous ridiculousness, this is the book for you.

...like an origami fake poo. One thing you can count on from Dave Barry, which he delivers flawlessly here, is the relentless downhill momentum of the plot. He starts the ball rolling with a simple misunderstanding between strangers, which gains momentum as it travels through the book, picking up a wide cast of improbable characters and echoes of current events until it quite logically reaches a quite illogical finale. My two favorite parts are Jimmy Carter (the dog) and the Sarah Palin Incident, both of which are laugh-until-you-tear-up and share-with-your-friends funny. Is it gross? You betcha. But the gross jokes are FUNNY, unlike many movies and books I could name. When I first started reading, I thought that the format (there are two narrators and they take turns narrating chapters) would get annoying, but the two lunatics were so different and had such unique voices that I found myself enjoying the changeover at each chapter. I highly recommend this book for the reader who's not too proud to enjoy a well-plotted and well-paced novel with a whiff of the gross.

This book is written in first person, with the two main characters narrating alternate chapters. It is fast paced, with one hilarious gag after another. While this is not great literature, it is totally funny. Every aspiring humor writer should read this.It is the story of two men, a forensic plumber and a pet shop owner (whose store is named "The Wine Shop"), who get into a series of over-the-top adventures that take them all around the world. It is James Bond meets Abbott and Costello. I won't give away any of the plot, but I will say that they overturn Fidel Castro, stop a major terrorist attack and shake up the communist world before they finally get back home. The laughs are largely of the slapstick variety, with a little bathroom humor thrown in, and there is a great deal of earthy language. These things might offend some people. But no piece of humor, even the best, will please everyone. I found myself laughing out loud while reading this, and so will a lot of other people. If you want an easy read that is also drop-dead hilarious, this is the book.

Immature? Definitely. I loved how the book jumps situations very quickly and you find yourself in highly unlikely scenarios that are always hilarious. Oh - and loads of profanity involving an incredibly despicable character that I found very entertaining. It's incredibly silly, this book, is filled with generally offensive humor. I know some friends I could recommend this to, but to some I absolutely wouldn't, if you are a "serious" person, maybe it's not for you. I'm glad I bought it.

This book is profane, has a plot that is impossible to take seriously, appears to have been written during a party that featured a lot of alcohol, and was so funny that my wife thought I was having a medical emergency when she found me unable to stop laughing loudly as I tried to read it. It was not until I had run out of breath that I was able to continue. Barry's ability to sketch scenes that are so outlandish as to defy logic, yet so enjoyable funny you can't stop reading them, is beyond compare. This book won't win any literary prizes, but anyone in dire need of a full-blown, paralyzing laugh, should buy it immediately. I don't recommend reading it in a public setting, such as on a passenger plane, or bus, as it may lead to a law enforcement episode.
